Never too late to understand these in your 40s
A few reminders that feel more relevant as I get older: boundaries, self-respect, honest answers and knowing when to move on.
Never too late to understand these in your 40s.
- Being too friendly invites a lot of disrespect.
- Sometimes, it’s not ego; it’s self-respect.
- In the end, you only have yourself.
- Things end, people change, and life goes on.
- It all starts with a dream.
- Some goodbyes are good for your growth.
- Listen to your heart, not to other people’s opinions.
- A clear rejection is better than a fake promise.
- Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn.
- Respect tastes better than attention.
I find this a refreshing reminder as I grow older. Some of these things sound obvious when I read them. Putting them into practice is another matter.
The ones about self-respect and a clear rejection stand out to me. An honest no might sting, but at least I know where I stand. A promise that goes nowhere just keeps me waiting.
I don’t take the first point to mean I should stop being friendly. I’d rather remember that being kind doesn’t mean saying yes to everything or accepting how someone treats me just to keep things pleasant.
And “you only have yourself” feels a bit harsh if I take it literally. People can care for one another. For me, the useful reminder is to take responsibility for my own choices, even when I value someone else’s opinion.
I still have things I want to do and things I need to learn. Getting older doesn’t put an end to either. Maybe I just want to spend my energy a little more carefully now.
